First thing you should do is start by writing down what you eat on a daily basis by keeping a food journal for a week. You can’t make changes if you don’t know what the problem is. After writing in your journal maybe you realize you don’t eat enough fruits or vegetables. Adding just one extra fruit or vegetable to your daily diet can make a huge difference.
As far as alternatives to food, let’s say you have $5. You can go to your local corner store and buy a soda, a bag of chips, a honey bun, and maybe some candy. All of these foods are sweet and salty and taste really good. Here are the problems with these types of food. They are high in calorie and provide little to no nutrients to your body. They contain lots of sugar, which ends up getting stored as fat and can end up causing weight gain.
It’s okay to have these foods once in a while, but eating food like this everyday can be problematic for your health.
Let’s revisit your $5 and think about how you can make healthier choices. You can still visit your local corner store. Instead of buying chips grab some peanuts or type of nut. If you really want chips look for baked chips or kettle chips. There are even some lower fat or sodium options available. You can also visit a nearby fruit cart and purchase a banana or an apple. This option usually costs about 50 cents.
Instead of soda, drink water. I know, I know, but soda tastes so much better. After we start drinking water on a daily basis our body gets used to it. We get more energy and feel less tired. This is because our body now has what it needs to support healthy blood flow through out our body.
In addition to buying fruit and nuts we can spend our money on a granola bar or yogurt. The great thing about these food compared to our unhealthy foods is that you get more bang for your buck. These foods have more nutrients and will help you feel fuller for longer.
